End-of life-care: Community meetings

Posted on March 1, 2019

People living in Glamorgan Spring Bay and the Derwent Valley with an interest in palliative and end-of-life care are encouraged to attend upcoming community meetings to find out more about a national initiative aiming to improve access to safe, quality palliative care at home.

The Greater Choice for At Home Palliative Care measure is an Australian Government initiative being trialled in select locations across the country. More information is on the Department of Health website here.

It’s founded on a compassionate community approach to palliative and end-of-life care. This means a range of community members – from family members and carers, to health professionals and volunteers – are supported to respond to experiences of death, dying and bereavement with confidence and skill. Services, social networks, hospitals, faith groups, local businesses, local organisations and neighbours also have a role to play.

Primary Health Tasmania is local facilitator of the Greater Choice for At Home Palliative Care measure, which boosts federal funding for palliative care coordination.

A series of community meetings will be held across Glamorgan Spring Bay and in the Derwent Valley to bring together community members with an interest in palliative and end-of-life care.

The goal of these meetings is to:

  • provide community members with information on the Greater Choice for At Home Palliative Care measure
  • seek expressions of interest from community members keen to become part of a local palliative care community consultative group.
