MBS systems

The Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) is a listing of all Medicare services subsided by the Australian Government.

A searchable version of the MBS is available via MBS Online, along with news, fact sheets and other downloadable resources.

To claim payments under the MBS a health professional must meet certain requirements.

Beyond regular consultation items, there are a number of MBS item numbers specific to general practice.

General Practice in Aged Care Incentive

The General Practice in Aged Care Incentive (GPACI) user guide has been developed to help general practices plan their delivery of care under the program.

GPACI provides incentive payments to general practices and GPs for delivering regular visits and care planning to permanent residents of aged care homes. The incentive program aims to strengthen and formalise relationships between residents and their care providers.

Better Access (mental health)

The Better Access MBS User Guide has been developed to help general practices apply changes which came into effect on 1 November 2025.

These changes will enhance continuity of care by linking the preparation of a Mental Health Treatment Plan, referrals for treatment, and reviews of a treatment plan to either a patient’s GP or prescribed medical practitioner at a patient’s MyMedicare practice, or their usual medical practitioner.

To better integrate care for patients’ physical and mental health care needs, mental health plan review and mental health consultation items are being removed from the MBS, with GPs and prescribed medical practitioners able to use general attendance items.
