This is an annual educational update, organised by Primary Health Tasmania and the Tasmanian Sexual Health Service. This webinar will provide healthcare professionals with the latest updates and clinical guidance on key areas of sexual health and gender-affirming care in Tasmania. Topics that will be covered include the current epidemiology of sexually transmissible infections (STIs) in Tasmania, clinical aspects of syphilis, HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and best practice approaches to Gender Affirming Care. The session is designed to support evidence-informed practice and improve health outcomes for diverse populations.

This event is RACGP and ACCRM approved for 1.5hours of Educational Activities.

Learning outcomes:

  • Awareness of current epidemiological data to understand the distribution and determinants of STIs in Tasmania in 2025
  • Describe the clinical features, treatment approaches, and follow-up requirements for syphilis across its stages
  • Describe the clinical indications, timing, and recommended management of HIV post-exposure prophylaxis
  • Understand the accessibility and referral pathways for HIV Post Exposure Prophylaxis in Tasmania
  • Summarise current clinical guidelines and approaches to providing gender-affirming care for transgender and gender-diverse individuals

Speaker Information:

Dr Alvin Ding is a Consultant in the Tasmanian Sexual Health Service – having moved from the United Kingdom in 2016 with his family. He has been working in Sexual Health and HIV Medicine for more than a decade.

Dr Jennifer Misson is a UTAS graduate who has gone on to complete her General Practitioner and Sexual Health Physician fellowships.  Jenny has experience in sexual and reproductive health care in Tasmania and interstate, and is particularly interested in marginalised and disadvantaged populations.  Outside of work she is a passionate reader, grower, and creator.

Dr Peta Gardam is a current sexual health advanced trainee. She completed her medical studies at the University of Queensland and moved to Tasmania for her General Practice training. Peta has worked as a local GP for the last 8 years. She has always been passionate about sexual health and is thoroughly enjoying this new challenge and phase of her career.

Dr Karin English is a Specialist Medical Advisor (Public Health Physician) in the Tasmanian Department of Health. Her background includes clinical and public health medicine. Her main research background is in environmental health, and she also has published in the field of sexual health.  Karin has been a representative on the Blood Borne Viruses and Sexually Transmissible Infections Standing Committee (BBVSS) 2023-2025. She co-chairs the BBVSTI statewide working group with Louise Owen. Her public health work since 2023 has been focused on blood borne viruses and sexually transmitted infections. Karin has contributed to the development of national and local sexual health promotion campaigns (e.g. BeforePlay and ACT’s sexual health communication strategy), policies (e.g. national syphilis priority actions and local guidelines to control syphilis) and programs (e.g. after-hours free STI testing in the ACT) to address blood borne viruses and sexually transmitted infections. Karin has been involved in the operational public health response to various notifiable BBVSTIs, including mpox outbreaks and syphilis cases in pregnancy.
