Primary Health Tasmania’s Mental Health Continuum of Care Project aims to improve Tasmanians’ experience of and outcomes from the mental health services we commission.

The project will seek to enhance service integration and coordination, so people experience a more cohesive journey across mental health services and receive the right care at the right time.

It will involve gathering information and feedback about our current service model to help inform a new commissioning model.

Our focus will initially be on the following types of services we commission:

  • low intensity services (for people with mild mental illness or at risk of mental illness)
  • short-term trauma counselling
  • short-term psychological interventions
  • services for adults with complex and severe mental illness.

While the MHCoC project is currently focused on low intensity services, short-term trauma counselling, short-term psychological interventions, and services for adults with complex and severe mental illness, we are also exploring how the continuum of care model might extend over time to include alcohol and other drugs, psychosocial support services, and youth enhanced services.

Your involvement

As a key partner, we are keen for your involvement as we design our new approach. We are planning to hold two virtual workshops with our current commissioned mental health and alcohol and other drug service providers as well as representatives from the broader mental health system in Tasmania.

The sessions will be focused on exploring key challenges and opportunities for improving commissioned mental health services in Tasmania. The consultation session will focus on:

  • understanding your experiences of providing mental health services in Tasmania
  • exploring the key challenges and barriers to providing better coordinated and integrated mental health services in Tasmania
  • exploring your priorities and ideas about improving mental health services in Tasmania.

To help us manage numbers for the event, we ask that you limit attendance from your organisation to a maximum of two representatives. Should you be unable to attend the above session a link to a survey will be available to provide your insights.

There will be opportunities for further input and collaboration as we undertake further consultation sessions to support the development of a new service commission model from 24 June – 30 June. These workshops will be held in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and virtually and will be focused on collaboratively testing and refining a new model of care.
